Angry Monthly Update: March 2020

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

March 13, 2020

Hey all,

This is really something I have to get back into the habit of doing every month. Posting an update about what’s going on at TheAngryGM.com and on Patreon and what to expect in the coming month. Unfortunately, I’m a dumba$& in some ways and only end up posting updates when the schedule runs into a hiccup and I feel like I owe some kind of explanation to my readers and supporters. So, that’s something that’s going to have to start happening again. Let’s say the first Monday of every month. Starting on April 6.

That out of the way, on with the update.

First, there wasn’t an article this past week as you probably noticed. I’m sorry about that. I ended up having to take care of some medical crap this past week due to some changes in the management of a chronic illness… blah blah blah. Don’t worry about it. Also, the week was thrown into chaos thanks to The Tiny GM’s university f$&%ing panicking over a certain illness who shall not be named and cancelling everything. That affects my schedule because we share both a work-space and a vehicle and because when you’re living together, your schedules affect each other a lot. Anyway…

There’s four articles coming this month yet. First, there’s an article on a game management tool I call The Whatever Stat. Next, there’s the next part of the AngryCraft series called The Great Magic Item Analysis. After that, there’s two more articles. One is about starting off your campaign and world building and one is a BS article further analyzing the design of the current edition of D&D, but with a big twist. Here’s when to expect them:

The Whatever Stat: March 16 (Patreon Early Access), March 18 (TheAngryGM.com)
The Great Magic Item Analysis: March 23 (Patreon Early Access), March 25 (TheAngryGM.com)
BS Article: March 27 (Patreon Early Access), March 30 (TheAngryGM.com)
World/Campaign Building: March 30 (Patreon Early Access), April 1 (TheAngryGM.com)

I also have two Ask Angry articles scheduled for this month on March 19 and March 26.

Thereafter, new articles will go into Patreon Early Access on Fridays and then will be live on TheAngryGM.com on Wednesdays. That’s the release schedule I want to maintain going forward.

The reason the first couple of articles have taken a bit longer to deliver is because I have changed my workflow substantially. A number of you have noticed and commented on the improved quality of the articles over the last month. There are far fewer typos, missing words, and proofreading problems. And people have been reporting that they feel the articles are more focused and flow better. And the word count is trending – slightly – downward. This is due to the adoption of a much more rigorous process of design/research, drafting, rewriting, revising, and proofreading. Now, to be clear, no one asked me to do that. The closest anyone got to saying anything was reporting typographical errors and proofreading problems in my articles every week. And frankly, the number of errors that were slipping through was becoming embarrassing. But I had personally noticed that the quality of my writing was deteriorating. While I’ve always been conversational and verbose – and I consider that part of my style – my articles were becoming bloated, rambling, and unfocused. And I was spending a lot of time having hypothetical arguments with nonexistent people. Beyond that, the already high word count was increasing with every article.

And now, things are going in a better direction. That’s partly just my opinion. But it’s mostly based on the feedback I’ve received. And I’m grateful to all of you who took the time to reach out and call out the changes you noticed. Things will continue to improve as I tighten up my style. But the new workflow has greatly increased the amount of time I spend on each article. It’s worth it. You expect quality and you deserve quality. And if you’re a supporter, you pay for quality. But shifting the workflow has caused a little backlog as I try to bring it in line with a regular release schedule. Hence why I’m still in a position where sudden changes in my schedule or a week of medical problems will disrupt my release schedule. But if I keep on the way I’m going, I will be ahead by the start of April and that shouldn’t be an issue going forward. And posting a monthly update will help me keep on that track because it will force me to plan out the month’s articles in advance.

There will be a live chat on Discord for my Patrons on Tuesday, March 24 at 9:00 PM EDT. It will be recorded. And the recording will be posted by the following Tuesday.

Meanwhile, I have something to tease. On April 1 – and yes, I realize that it’s dangerous to post anything you want people to take seriously on April 1 – on April 1, I’m going to announce a fun contest on my site with a neat prize that will help one lucky reader improve their RPG mapping skills. So look out for that.

Anyway, that’s it. That’s the update. Now you know what’s coming. Thanks for your patience and understanding regarding this recent delay. I hope you all enjoy the next slew of articles and the ongoing quality improvements. And thank you for your readership, support, and encouragement.

  1. Thank you for not naming the thing that must not be named. It’s all anyone talks about these days, what a breath of fresh air.

  2. Good job taking more time to refine and focus your articles, the altered schedule is definitely worth it for you to be able to polish your content a bit more. It’s good material and deserves a good form.

  3. love your articles (turned me from a 1/10 GM to a solid 3/10) and i’m glad you’re taking an effort to improve them

  4. While I love your content, I think that you don’t owe us an explanation or a schedule. As far as I’m concerned, you do what works for you! We should be grateful for your wisdom whenever you share it.

    • I think this might be a step toward dealing with chronic NDS; suffering from a pretty serious case myself, I can say that telling other people your plans makes it more difficult to just not do them. The external accountability, even if it’s a “soft accountability” like those of us who enjoy Angry’s content, makes it more difficult to give up on your plans and just do something to escape your stressors (like playing too much Warframe x.x).

If you’re not sure what NDS is, check out Angry’s article titled “The Game Must Go On: When Procrastination Wrecks Your Gaming Life” in the “Up Your GMing Level” section of “How to F$&%ing GM” menu (you’ll have to scroll to the bottom of the first page and select “Older Posts”).

    • I disagree. I think I do owe people an explanation because of the number of people I have providing financial support to keep this site up and keep the content flowing. I’ve made promises and I’m taking people’s money in return for those promises. And they deserve to know what’s happening and what to expect. I know that’s a rare stance for a content creator to take these days, but I never want to fall into the trap of feeling like I “deserve” support just for existing and that my audience should be grateful for anything I do. I will never stop striving to earn people’s support and readership. And the day I stop trying to earn it is the day I no longer deserve it. But thank you for your support and encouragement. It is appreciated. Truly.

  5. The more I think about this contest the more curious I get. Could it be a mapping contest? Where the prize for generating the best map is learning how to draw even better maps? Exciting but also seems slightly strange.

Anyway, best of luck to you and everyone around you.
