The Angry Monthly Update: March 2024

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

March 4, 2024

Happy Monday and Happy March… is what I’d be saying if I were a totally different person. Screw Mondays, screw March, screw months, and screw optimism.

All right, all right, I’m not actually grouchy today. At least I’m not any more grouchy than usual. Actually, the only thing I feel crappy about is that my recovery — physical, mental, and professional — isn’t going as fast as I’d like.

Which segues nicely into the actual update…

The Personal Stuff

I’m alive. For now.

Expect further bulletins as events warrant.

The Professional Stuff

Ha! Professional! I’m such a professional and this is totally a real profession!

Anyway…

As you will all probably remember, there’s a few benchmarks that I’m demanding I hit before I consider myself “back on track.” They are, in priority order…

  1. I must be publishing four Features per month.
  2. I must be publishing one Feature per week on Wednesday of that week.
  3. I must record a Proofreadaloud for each Feature for my supporters for simultaneous release with the Feature.
  4. I must have published the first True Campaign Managery lesson, thereby launching that series.
  5. I must have published the first Angry Hack, thereby launching that series.
  6. I must be publishing one Club Slapdash Post for my Frienemy-tier supporters per week on Friday of that week.

The ones I’ve crossed out are the ones I’ve hit and feel I can consistently maintain. The damned Proofreadalouds are still not coming out on time because I’m publishing everything very close to the deadline. I’m hoping to change that with this week’s Feature, but a cardiology exam may screw that up. But, by next week, that won’t be a problem anymore. I’m just ahead enough right now that, even if I can’t get the Proofreadaloud out on time this week, I can definitely get it out next week.

That means the next target is to finally publish the Tension Dice Angry Hack. Which I have slated for the end of this month, on March 27. And then I can resume work on Slapdash.

A Note on Slapdash

Some of you have asked me about the projected timeline for Project Slapdash. And I do not have an answer right now. I will determine the answer when I’ve hit the bottom of the list of goals above. Until I am consistently putting out the regular content I’ve promised to all of you, I can’t pursue Project Slapdash. It’s on hold until I’m on track. That’s the only way it’ll get done.

Content for the Month

This month, I’ve got two True Campaign Managery lessons coming. The first is on Campaign Vision and the second is, I think, about whether or not to even Session Zero and how to do it.

I’ve also invited my Patreon and SubscribeStar supporters to pick a topic for the Feature I shove between those two lessons. They’ve already proposed a list of terrible topics and now they’re voting on which of the five topics I chose as the “least worst” I’ll actually write about. It should be shit.

And, of course, there’s the Tension Dice Angry Hack at the end of the month.

March Mostly Monthly Live Chat

Angry’s Mostly Monthly Live Chat will be streamed on Discord and recorded for supporters on Monday, March 11 at 8:00 PM EDT.

Random Decision to Stream

While I’m still months away from doing any official, TTRPG-related video content I do enjoy occasionally hosting an impromptu for-fun stream. And this came up over the weekend in a side conversation and then I polled the supporter Discord for interest.

I’m going to stream a playthrough of Tunic on my currently, sparsely used Angry Games YouTube Channel. I’ll be doing a fresh, but complete playthrough. It’ll likely take four play sessions. Even though I’ve played through it before, several times, I’ll be focusing on the beginner experience so I can discuss the way the game’s puzzles are designed, presented, and revealed. It should be especially fun for anyone who didn’t get to play through the game the first time around but wants the experience of puzzling through it.

First play session will be Monday, March 18 at 7:30 PM for about two hours. The recording will stay on YouTube if you want to watch it after the fact. It’ll keep my one, lone, Link to the Past Randomizer playthrough company.

  1. Finalized Tension Dice rules would be amazing. The ones you posted previously and talking to players about characters have done the Lord’s work for the flow of my games.

  2. TUNIC is an amazing game. One of my favorites. It’s probably one of those games that uses nostalgia as an aesthetic in a very good way.
Especially as someone who’s not got English as a first language, text heavy games were often a big mystery – so the nostalgia is extra interesting in this game.

That said: I still recommend anyone who hasn’t played it to do a blind playthrough. Watching a let’s play will spoil some of the experience. (I’m usually not much of a spoiler warning guy, but this game is an exception)
