Special Release: The Angry GM’s April 2024 Mostly Monthly Live Chat

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

April 26, 2024

Those of you who don’t Support the Site may have no idea what the hell a Mostly Monthly Live Chat is. It’s an hour — or longer — thing I do most months on The Angry Discord Server. I catch folks up on site news and future plans, discuss topics of personal interest to me, and then spend a lot of time doing a Q&A with those who’ve gathered to listen live. They’re a lot of fun. Usually.

I then distribute the recording in Podcast format to supporters who were unable to participate.

But I want this particular recording to go out to everyone. As I explain in the podcast, I pride myself on my integrity and transparency. I do my best to keep my promises and deliver the very best content I can. And when I can’t do that — because I’m only human — my supporters deserve to know what’s going on, why, and what I’m doing to rectify it. That’s just how you do.

Well, whether you provide financial support for my work, you are, nonetheless a supporter. You show up, you read my work, you sometimes comment on the site, you e-mail me, you send me messages, and that’s all a kind of support too. Invaluable support.

I gave over about a third of this particular recording to reporting on my current status, my shortfalls over the last several months, how I plan to recover, and what that looks like. And I think everyone who wants to hear it deserves to. The other two thirds of this very long Live Chat is fun Q&A and interaction with the assembled chatters. So it’s not all doom and gloom and serious crap.

Anyway… give it a listen if you’re so inclined. Or download it to listen later.

Episode Notes

This Live Chat was recorded on April 24, 2024 at 7:30 PM EDT.

It starts with a pretty hefty status update about my personal life and my ongoing struggles, then moves on to some fun Q&A, then has a dump about the deadlines I’m aspiring to hit in May to get back on track, then a bit more fun Q&A, and it goes on for a looooooong time…

Because it contains a lot of very transparent information about my plans, shortfalls, and attempts to recover, I am making it available to everyone who reads my site. Not just supporters. I will also be posting an update in early May that summarizes the plans for May.

  1. I don’t like cat people too — and all those other nonsense races. I too believe the DM should be able to have whatever races they want in their game, and for much the same reasons. I don’t like the kitchen sink approach to worldbuilding. Thanks for saying this, Angry.

  2. I had the rare good fortune of being able to listen to a podcast this morning and I’m very happy you dropped this just in time. This was my first time listening in, and I was very pleased that you are as engaging in voice as in text. I am very excited for your planned upcoming content, at whatever pace works for you. I also hope to be able to spend more time with the Discord community in the next few weeks. I wish you all the best!

  3. I would have never guessed you were once so obese, Angry. Coming back from that, and the associated health problems, so thoroughly is a remarkable achievement, and bodes well for getting through the current setbacks.

  4. I’m so sorry for your losses, both personal and health-related. Thank you for sharing. I can identify(in part) with what you are going through, because I just lost my mom. Grieving is one part of life I think everyone wishes they could just fast forward through. I know I do.

I just want you to know that one thing I’ve been doing to help myself feel better is read your articles, so thank you for all you’ve posted over the years. Since I’m relatively new here, I have plenty to get me through the next few months.

  5. Hey Angry. I think I first got to your website when you released your articles on how to make travel fun, and I really started enjoying content around the Silver and Gold (how to handle treasure) articles. I’ve been reading pretty silently, but sharing to friends when I find an article I like.

When everything started getting rough for you, I didn’t exactly know what to say, because I’ve had some similar stuff happen to me as well in the past, and most of what people said to me felt unauthentic to even harmful, something you’ve echoed before. So I didn’t want to repeat that to you, because to some small extent, I get it. After I listened to this month’s livechat, I decided I needed to say something.

Long rambling thing aside, I enjoy your content. Thanks for making it, and I look forward to being told I’m bad at GMing again. And again. Then being told I’m wrong for enjoying and allowing the weird player options as long as GM (usually me) approves.

  6. You know what I like about you opening up is that it shows that “The Angry GM” is a persona, that there’s more to the person Scott Rehm. It makes you human.
It of course sucks that you have to go through all this, and every since I started supporting this blog, I did so because I value the things I get from it – not the quantity.

There’s a lot of talk about society and men’s place in it etc. these days. And sometimes it’s good to just hear people being people. And we often forget that at the end of the day, society is just humans trying to get by. And we shouldn’t be too hard on everyone all the time.

[EDIT – I corrected a mistake. My name is not Jon Mosely. I am Scott Rehm. John Mosely is the artist who drew Angry and all of my site art and illustrated my book.]

  7. Bash was FF12 – which was set in the same universe as several other FF games – but the bunny ladies were in FF12 and FFTAdvance.

Even in video games Fantasy Races must be distinct to matter. Take Baldur’s Gate 3 for instance: Does the race of ANY of the companions actually matter other than being a visual que? There’s only one: Lae’zel. She’s the only character that goes “This is my space alien frog people race! Now bow!”
Shadowheart is a half-elf, but could equally have been human.
Astarion is an elf, but you only remember that he’s a vampire (of the young adult novel for girls kind).
Karlack? Big red muscle mommy, not a single aspect of her is Tiefling – she doesn’t even look like the other Tieflings (Which the game does a decent job at making feel “exotic”)

I have certain “visual quirks” for all my not human races in my campaign – which I try to repeat all the time. I also made it so that not everyone speaks common, because a person is going to feel a lot more foreign and different when I don’t speak for them, but just narrate their actions.

  8. Hey I just wanted to add my thanks for talking so candidly about mental health. Even when I “know” the best thing to when you’re in a depression is to try and stay active and look after your body, its always helpful to be reminded.

From a game running advice perspective, I also wanted to add your articles have been inspiring and I’m excited to see the work you put out in future. Best of luck on your reboot.

  9. I am a player not a GM, and I like to know how the sausage is made. Your articles have helped me become a better player and better players lead to less bad games. I also often discuss the subject of your articles with the GM whose table I always have an invite to.

    Thank You.

As for helping your work get more exposure, perhaps there ought to be a more public place for discussing your work. I understand the business case for a paid supporter discord. You have also also stated that non paying readers do support you in other ways. Ought the Angry Discord be private or would there be a benefit to public access with private sections for paying customers instead?
